Dahlias should not dry out completely , so store them in plastic bags with a few holes punched in them. Place an equal volume of vermiculite or peat moss in the bag to absorb the moisture given off by the roots. The acidity of the peat moss also tends to keep disease organisms to a minimum. The prepared bags should then be kept in a dry dark location at a temperature of 45-50 degrees

I shake off the dirt and put them in a paper bag, label it and leave in the cellar (or a garage if you have one!) They shouldn't freeze but like to be cool so they don't dry out.

I store mine in a container of wood shavings or sawdust. Pet supply stores sell shavings by the bale as animal bedding. Store in a cool place, but not freezing. They may be starting to sprout in Spring before you are ready to plant, so handle with care.
